Which states get a public holiday for the King’s Birthday?
These states will celebrate the King’s Birthday long weekend and enjoy a three-day long weekend:
New South Wales
Victoria
South Australia
Australian Capital Territory
Northern Territory
Tasmania
Which states don’t get a public holiday on June 10?
Queensland will have their King’s Birthday long weekend on Monday, October 7, and Western Australia will celebrate on Monday, September 23, however, they do have Western Australia Day every year on the first Monday of June.
Why do we celebrate the King’s birthday in June?
The King’s Birthday has been celebrated since 1748 when King George II reigned. Later, King Edward VII moved the date to June due to the weather, as he hoped people would be able to enjoy the holiday during summer and not rainy November when his actual birthday was.
Between 1788 and 1936, Australia celebrated the long weekend on the same day as the monarch’s actual birthday, but then the government decided to follow the UK’s lead and move it to mid-year so that all the public holidays were spaced out evenly.
When is the King’s actual birthday?
King Charles’ actual birthday isn’t until November 14, but his birthday is celebrated at different times of the year in different countries.
When do double demerits start?
Double demerits will be in effect this weekend for some jurisdictions.
This means certain driving offenses will carry twice the license point penalty during this period, compared with normal days.
Here’s when double demerits for the King’s Birthday long weekend will kick in:
Australian Capital Territory: From 12 am Friday, June 7 until 11.59 pm Monday, June 10
New South Wales: From 12.01 am June 7 until 11.59 pm June 10
Western Australia: Friday, September 20 – Monday, September 23
Queensland is a little different in that its double demerits scheme is active year-round.
It’s designed to target repeat offenders and is applied to subsequent offenses committed within 12 months of the first.
Victoria, Tasmania South Australia, and the Northern Territory do not use a double demerit points scheme.
But drivers are still being urged to take care on the roads, regardless of whether double demerits are in place.
What will be open on the King’s Birthday?
You may want to check if your favorite restaurants are open, however, the King’s Birthday is not like Good Friday or Christmas Day where most shops, pubs, cafes, and restaurants are closed.
Some businesses may choose to close, but there are no rules about trading hours.
